The Reckoning: What We Owe the First Generation Raised Inside Intelligence
Every generation inherits a tool it did not build and cannot fully explain.
Fire. The printing press. The internet.
Each one arrived carrying both a promise and a debt, the promise of what it could do, and the debt owed by anyone who never learned to wield it.
Artificial intelligence is the largest of these tools yet, and it did not wait for permission. It is already inside the classroom, the group chat, the college essay, the doctor's office, the boardroom. A generation is growing up with the most powerful cognitive amplifier in human history sitting in their pocket, and almost no one has taught them how to use it without losing themselves inside it.
This is not a school problem. It is not a parenting problem. It is a civilizational one, and it belongs to all of us: educators, researchers, technologists, and the institutions built to steward what comes next.
The Artificial Intelligence Institute exists to build the piece no one else is building: the behavioral infrastructure, the trained habits of thinking, verifying, and judgment, that has to exist underneath any technology this powerful. We call it Driver's Education for Artificial Intelligence. Five classes. Five hours. A discipline, not a rule.
Two years of real classroom deployment across 20+ school sites and 6,000+ students have shown us the shape of this problem with a precision most conversations still lack.
The tool has already arrived.
The question left standing is whether we build the discipline to match it, before the habits harden.
Human thinking must remain the operating system.
