FOR school DISTRICTS

Deployed Across 20 School
Sites. Measured. Documented.

Spark Laboratories conducted one of the largest structured early AI literacy
pilots in California, implementing Ethical AI instruction across 20 public school sites within a unified school district.

AI use is already in your classrooms. Structured guidance is not — yet.

CA State-Level Pilot. Measured Impact. Structured Outcomes. One of the largest early AI behavioral programs in the country, built on science that doesn’t exist anywhere else.

Students Are Already Using AI — Without Guidance

By third grade, many students are already using AI the only way an untrained user can: asking for answers, copying the output, moving on. This pattern doesn’t self-correct. It compounds. Grades 4–6 are a clear developmental inflection point, where structured introduction is not only appropriate, but necessary.

The Behavior Shift Was Measurable

Post-program data shows students adopted permission-first behaviors, distinguished assistance from substitution, and reinforced independent reasoning before engaging with AI. Students consistently articulated a core principle: AI enhances thinking, it does not replace it.

Districts Are Already Re-Evaluating Policy Because of It

Beyond individual student outcomes, the pilot produced measurable shifts in district-level understanding, instructional strategy, and administrative decision-making. The participating district is actively re-evaluating student access, instructional frameworks, and oversight protocols.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR DISTRICT

The Data Is Clear. The Guidance Gap Is Real.

AI use is already here

Most upper elementary students are already using AI tools on their own, without shared norms, structured guidance, or adult oversight.

The habit window is closing

Grades 4–6 is the developmental inflection point, where cognitive habits form and shortcut dependency either takes root or gets corrected. Waiting is not neutral.

Policy alone isn’t enough

Academic integrity policies tell students what's expected. The AI Foundations Framework teaches them how to think, the only durable solution to cognitive offloading.

The gap compounds

Students relying on cognitive offloading today will face AI detection filters in high school and college, without the independent thinking skills to compete. This is a tsunami building slowly.

What Changes After Five Sessions.

Delivered through five structured one-hour sessions, guided exercises, real-world simulations, and age-appropriate AI evaluation techniques, the Institute's program produces measurable, observable behavioral shifts.

Permission-first behavior adopted. Students learned to ask before using AI, establishing the reasoning-first habit the Framework is built around.

Stronger distinction between assistance and substitution. Students articulated and demonstrated the difference between using AI to extend thinking versus replace it.

Independent reasoning reinforced before AI engagement. Students developed structured "think first" approaches, consistently applying their own reasoning before turning to AI.

Increased confidence in identifying misinformation. Students showed measurable improvement in recognizing AI-generated content and bias, core metacognitive scaffolding outcomes.

District-level shift in strategy. Administrators and educators involved reported measurable changes in how they perceive, guide, and manage student AI interaction, confirming program-wide impact beyond the classroom.

Simple to Start. Built to Scale.

READY TO BRING THIS TO YOUR DISTRICT?

Every District Will Answer This Question —By Decision or By Default.

Are your students building the cognitive habits that make AI a superpower, or the shortcut dependency that will limit them? The Institute has the science, the program, and the deployment record. The next step is yours.

A policy tells students what is expected. Training teaches them how to meet it.
