The Fourth Grade Turning Point: Where AI Stops Being a Novelty and Becomes a Habit

We could have softened this. For a while, we did.

For the first stretch of our deployment, we talked around the numbers a little, “usage accelerates,” “students engage earlier than expected.” Comfortable language. But two years in, as both scientists and parents, we’ve come to a harder conclusion: softening the number doesn’t change what’s happening in the room. It just makes the adults reading about it more comfortable while the number stays exactly the same.

So here’s the number, plainly. In our own two years of deployment — a blind, self-reported survey across our classrooms, not a guess, 59 percent of fourth graders told us they were already using AI for schoolwork. By fifth grade, that’s 69 percent. By sixth grade and beyond, it’s 75 percent and climbing.


Nobody told these kids to say that. Nobody primed them. They told us, honestly, because we asked.



This Is Not a “Kids These Days” Story

Here’s what makes this data uncomfortable in the right way: it’s not a story about kids seeking shortcuts. It’s a story about kids who were never shown another way. Almost every one of them started the same way, asking for the answer, and getting it. Not because they’re lazy. Because nobody had shown them there was anything else to do with the tool.


That’s the habit that forms by default, and it’s exactly the wrong one. There is a dramatically more effective way to use AI, one where a student keeps their own reasoning in the driver’s seat and uses AI to sharpen it, verify it, extend it. Students who make that shift don’t just avoid the shortcut trap. They become measurably stronger thinkers, faster, while the thinking stays theirs.


We’ve watched it happen on camera, not just in a spreadsheet. One of our students, Paloma, started exactly where every untrained student starts, using AI for answers in third grade. Two years later, she asks for reasoning instead of answers, verifies what she’s given, and checks with her teacher before she submits anything. Another student, in his second year in the program, didn’t just hold onto that shift, the habit deepened. That’s the part that matters most: this isn’t a lesson that fades once the unit ends. It’s a habit that compounds, the same way the bad habit would have compounded if nobody had intervened.



Why Fourth Grade, Specifically

Fourth grade is when independent research and writing assignments start in earnest, the first time a student has real reason to go looking for an answer alone rather than being walked through one. It’s also, per our own data, exactly when AI usage stops being occasional and starts being habitual. That’s not a coincidence. It’s the window.

Reasoning habits, a student’s sense of their own learning identity, and basic digital judgment are all forming at that same age. Once they set, in either direction, they’re far harder to reshape later. Wait until high school to introduce structure, and you’re not training a new habit anymore. You’re trying to untrain one that’s already three or four years deep.



The Part That Matters Beyond the Classroom

There’s a piece of this that goes further than grades and homework, and it’s worth saying directly: learning to verify before trusting isn’t just an academic skill. It’s the same instinct that protects a person, later, from being misled, by AI-generated misinformation, by a confident-sounding wrong answer, by content designed to make something false look true. We don’t teach AI skills in a vacuum from ethics. Teaching a student to ask, “how do I know this is right?” is, at its core, teaching them to use a powerful tool for good instead of being used by it. That’s not a side benefit. It’s the point.



First-Generation Users, at Every Age

This isn’t only a kids’ issue, either. Nearly everyone using AI today, at any age, is a first-generation user of it. Nobody has an older sibling or parent who already learned to do this responsibly, because the technology is too new for that inheritance to exist yet. That’s exactly why we think of this as driver’s education, not a kids’ curriculum bolted onto fourth grade: everyone currently needs the equivalent of training wheels, because nobody has done this before.
